Childhood and teenagerhood can be quite dicey - to put it bluntly. Today, my daughter was put in the position to have to listen to a 12 year-old talk about things that even an adult shouldn't be exposed to, and she found herself quite traumatized. Thankfully, we have worked hard to keep open communication a priority in our family, and she felt safe enough to come to me, even in her discomfort.
Still, my mother's heart broke to witness her suffering, and I longed to "make it better." Having gone through similar situations with my older teens, I have learned well that these situations are an inevitable part of life, and, although certainly painful, they are still able to offer valuable lessons to be learned. We hashed through her feelings, finally getting down to the bottom line: she had experienced an unwilling confrontation with evil, resulting with feelings of violation and fear. In other words, the devil had had his way again.
Any Christian should understand these feelings well. As my daughter and I discussed, these feelings actually mean that our consciences are well-formed and sensitive to the dealings of the devil. They also hopefully demonstrate that we have not been over-exposed to his violations of us to the point that we have become desensitized to their effects on our souls, hearts and minds.
As she expressed her thoughts, she found herself longing to be with her best friend because "she would never talk about or even think about such horrible things. I know she is a good Catholic girl who just wants to love God and do the right things." I couldn't help but nod and smile. I knew that she was really longing for purity and freedom from her perceived defilement. Like all Christians having been confronted with evil in their own lives, I could certainly understand that longing.
That desire for purity and freedom in perfect good is one of the proofs scientists use for the "hard-wired for God" theory - a theory that many feel is proof positive for the existence of God. Only God is 100 percent perfect good, filled with complete purity. And, only He can purify our minds, hearts and souls, offering us the ability to be freed from the pain of sinful enslavement and exposure. There is no substitute on earth for this freedom.
Like my daughter has been reminded, the devil is always working, trying his best to destroy our joy in Christ and pull us away from His perfection and purity. When he succeeds in his attempts, let us minimize his success. Let us get help from the right people, and go straight to the Creator of Purity itself. Not only will we find relief, but the devil will have lost another battle. We can't go wrong with that, right?
May God be with us as we continue to endeavor to bring His kingdom to the world!
