Happy Feast of St. Blaise!! Although many of us will have our throats blessed this coming weekend, today is his actual feastday.
I have poignant memories of celebrating this day in school learning about his life as he healed many and set such a strong example of holding onto His love of God, refusing to renounce his faith and eventually giving up his life. I can still smell the beeswax of the crossed candles used to bless our throats; for some reason I loved getting this blessing, and I truly believed that St. Blaise would intercede and save me should I ever find myself at risk of choking.
There is such wisdom in the church when it comes to using ceremony and liturgy….they bring weight to and shed light on the significance of the moments we are celebrating or remembering. How grateful I am to participate in them!
Above is a very quick craft that we did to celebrate the feast…I am sure you can use many other food items with a similar result…it's just fun all around! For ours, we just inserted a toothpick where the licorice crosses; it's that simple!
God bless you all and may St. Blaise intercede for your throats should you ever need it! :)
