I had the privilege of attending my nephew's First Communion recently, and let me tell you, I will never forget it. I am sure you can relate to the common hustle and bustle of First Communion preparation... learning the proper rituals for receiving Him, practicing for Mass, preparing music and Mass parts (if applicable at his/her parish), choosing the perfect outfit, planning the celebration party. Sometimes it may seem that our kids aren't really understanding what it all means.
I always wonder and worry about this with my kids. When I received my First Holy Communion umpteen years ago (Did I say umpteen? I meant 10! :)), many of my friends were more concerned about their choice of dress and veil than about what they were really about to do. I have a feeling that you can relate.
However, I had no need to wonder about my nephew. A very short, incredible conversation with him showed me clearly where his heart lies.
Him: "Do you know why this is the best day of my life?"
Me, focusing intently on his next words: "No...why is it?"
Him, extending his arms out as if to encompass the world: "Because I get to eat the Guy who made all this!"
Wow...just wow. Enough said...because he gets it. And, inspiringly enough, the reality of his choice of words not only doesn't bother him, but gives him great joy!
To all of our First Holy Communicants out there (including my niece who will receive hers in 2 days!), as well as all of those receiving their Confirmation:
God be with you and enjoy your day -
It Is The Next Best Day of Your Life!!!
