Ahhh….the feastday of love, hearts and chocolate! All very good reasons for it to be one of my favorites!
Actually, this feastday is very special to me because of the great care my mother always took to show us how special we were to her on that day. Cardboard poster printouts decorated the walls, special napkins were used, and a beautiful heart-shaped cake adorned the very center of the dinner table. But, she didn't stop there. Our school lunches were always packed with a special valentine treat and card…I couldn't wait to open my pack at lunch to see what treasures it held inside! And then, upon returning home, our dinner plates were piled with valentine cards made by each member of the family and wonderful treats and candy. These are such great memories that we have continued that tradition in my own family. We do add a little more focus on the saint who made it all possible, but our dinner plates still hold some very special surprises.
So, as we pull out the paper and doilies, paints and crayons this week to prepare for next Sunday, why don't we play around with some Legos and make some other unique valentines? If you're up to the challenge, read below! We seriously can't wait to see what your kids (and you too, of course!) come up with!!
THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: St. Valentine
(February 7 - 13):
While not much is known about St. Valentine, one story of his life recounts that because he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, he was imprisoned, and, while there, healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he supposedly left the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine". As we celebrate his feast day next Sunday, build something related to St. Valentine's heroic life, or make a lego valentine for someone you love! Send us a picture and show us what you made!
